Blessed John Henry Newman Parish Social Group
Read 2505 Times
The present Social Group was originally formed in 2002 to organise the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the opening of St Therese’s church. The church was officially opened with the Christmas Midnight Mass on the 24th December 1953.
As well as celebrations it brought together many people, who were involved with sewing, gardening, drawing of cross ideas, flower arranging and many more activates as well as social gatherings. This was intended to be a one off committee but since then the group have arranged many varied and successful functions. The main one is now the annual parish BBQ held each summer and has been very well attended and successful and has helped to bring the three churches together socially.
We celebrated both the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and last year the Diamond Jubilee and in each case a special card was made and sent to the Queen and on both occasions we received replies from Buckingham Palace. (The acknowledgments are on display in the Parish Lounge.)
Quiz Nights, Dances, Wine Tasting Evenings, Children’s Disco, Joe Maiden Garden Question Time, have all taken place over the past 10 years.
One of our special functions is to arrange a Mass for the Sick and housebound, held in the Parish Centre and once in St John’s Halton. This is followed with a get together and refreshments.
The Lourdes raffle is run by the group every year around Christmas time and funds from this help finance trips to Lourdes for people nominated by Parishioners. This has allowed over 28 parishioners to travel with the parish to Lourdes.
We help out at the Parish Breakfast and are always ready to help when asked. The funds made from this has helped many groups like the uniform groups, Peru, Faith & Light, Corpus Christi College Students, SPUC, Adrian & Caroline Strain and many more.
We have been very fortunate to have a small but very willing committee but we are always on the lookout for new members, especially from Corpus Christi and St Gregory’s ends of the parish. Anyone who would like to join us would be made very welcome.
Contact can be made via the Parish office any morning on 2645260.
