Crossgates and District Good Neighbours Scheme

We are a new scheme, part of the Neighbourhood Network for Older People, which provides a range of services and social activities for older people and their carers. Our aim is to enable older people to remain independent as long as possible and to remain in their own home.

This is one of 40 similar projects spread throughout the city that caters for all, irrespective of race colour or creed. Neighbouring Schemes are South Seacroft Friends and Neighbours, North Seacroft Good Neighbours Scheme, Swarcliffe Good Neighbours Scheme, NET – Neighbourhood Elders Team in Garforth and HOPE - Halton Moor and Osmondthorpe Elderly. In fact we are one of the final pieces in the "jigsaw" to provide citywide coverage.

Situated in the old Victim Support Offices on Station Road opposite the Crossgates Shopping Centre, the office is very accessible on most bus routes and offering ample car parking. The scheme is run by and for older people and has a paid co-ordinator.

The Social Services Dept. of Leeds City Council and the Primary Care Trust (PCT) Health have jointly funded the project for the next three years. This funding covers only the salary of the co-ordinator and rent of the premises.

What can we offer to older people?

Having only been "up and running" for a few weeks, services are limited until we find suitable and willing volunteers. Currently we run an advice and information service from the centre each weekday between 9.30 am and 12.30 pm. There is a coffee morning held twice each week on Tuesdays and Fridays from 10.00 am to 12 noon. We currently have a stock of "Winter Warmers": thermal gloves, scarves, vests, pants, and long johns all at very reasonable prices.
We are beginning a gentle exercise class for both men and women, which is non-competitive, low impact, where no previous experience is required, nor any special clothing or equipment needed, just wear what is comfortable. This is ideal for those who have Arthritis, Osteoporosis, have suffered a Stroke, or it can be used as a follow-on after Physiotherapy or post convalescence. It is ideal for those new to exercise; in fact anyone whose vim has lost its vigour!! No one competes; everyone goes at their own pace. Not only are these classes for the good of your health, they’re also a social outlet; so come along and enjoy a cuppa’n’natter in good company and discover what a fun group we are. A great lifeline in more ways than one!

The classes will be run by a fully trained and insured instructor who is an affiliate member of Extend Exercise Training Ltd. (which is a registered charity).

These classes will be held on Wednesday afternoons from 2.00 pm to 3.30 pm including a break for refreshments, at Crossgates Community Centre on Maryfield Avenue just off Crossgates Road. They will probably be starting after Christmas, please ring Tony for further details.
