One of Michelangelo's greatest masterpieces was his famous statue of David.

He worked on it with such great passion that he often slept in his clothes, resenting the time it took to take them off and put them on again. He repeatedly examined and measured the block of marble, to see what pose it could accommodate. He made detailed drawings and sketches and tested his ideas on wax models and only when he was perfectly satisfied, did he pick up his chisel and mallet and begin his masterpiece.

He approached the painting of the Sistine Chapel with the same intense concentration, spending most of his time lying on hard boards and breathing the suffocating air just under the vault ceiling. He toiled for the next four years and suffered from inflamed eyes and skin irritation from the plaster dust: But look at what he produced a work of art that has never been surpassed.

On the subject of always giving of your best, Dr Martin Luther King once said, "If a man is called to be a street sweeper, he should sweep streets with the same passion as Michelangelo painted, or Beethoven composed music, or Shakespeare wrote poetry and he will be immortalised. After his death people will say, "Here lived a great street sweeper who did his job really well."

The moral of this little story is that if you're not passionate about what you do, then find something that you can feel passionate about. Don't just strive to make money, strive to make a difference in someone's life. Significance should be your goal and not survival. Don't do the minimum that will get you by, always do your best. Keep in mind that the ultimate master you're serving is Jesus Christ himself.
