Since approximately 1977, when Fr. Eamonn O'Brien (Columban) gave inspirational talks in the Leeds diocese, there has been a Justice and Peace Group in our Parish.

Previously known and the Corpus Christi Justice and Peace Group, it has been renamed Blessed John Henry Newman Justice and Peace Group to reflect the merging of St. Theresa's, St Gregory's and Corpus Christi parishes.

The aim of the group is to raise awareness of justice and peace issues; (local, national and international) in order to give our parish the opportunity to take part in simple and appropriate action.

Some of the activities the gorup has been invloved in are lisetd below:

  • CAFOD (Fast Days)
  • Corpus Christi Peru Bottle
  • Traidcarft (Fairtrade including Fair Trade Fortnight)
  • "Rich Man, Poor Man" meals
  • Aid to the Church in Need (Persecuted Christians)
  • Action by Christians against Torture (Prisoners of Consience)
  • St George's Crypt - to which occasionaldonations are made.
  • Food Bank (Jointly set up by J&P and SVP)
  • Letter writing to politicians, church leaders, supermarket chiefs etc.

The group is small in number (7 members) and new members are always welcome.

Meetings are held monthly on the second Tuesday of the Month.

At present the group meets at 7:15pm at the home of two of the members.

If and when the numbers increase the group should be happy to move to the Newman Centre to hold the Meetings.
