The Captain

Read 792 Times
For many people a cruise would be their ideal holiday, lying on deck in the sun, being spoilt by attentive crew members as the ship heads for another exotic destination with an experienced captain in charge.

A friend of mine was such a person and on one cruise ship he was on, the vessel was travelling in the Coral Sea, when the captain announced on the intercom system that the vessel had to slow down because they were entering a very narrow part of the channel and would have to take a pilot on board. He continued that they needed at least thirty feet of water beneath them to avoid running aground, hence the need for a pilot. Just then a small motor boat approached and standing on its deck was a captain from Australia. As he boarded the passenger liner, the crew saluted and he was shown to the bridge to be welcomed by the ship’s captain. This experienced seaman specialised in manoeuvring large ships through small spaces and because of his skill, they made it through without any problems.

There’s an important lesson here for all of us, before we get caught out in life’s storms we should make sure that Jesus is at the helm, as he is most experienced at keeping us from running aground in the channel of sin. The apostles were once caught out in a storm that threatened to sink their ship, when Paul stood up and announced, “Take heart, I believe God will do exactly what he told me.” Paul had confidence because he knew who the real captain was that day. He never doubted for a moment that God would honour his promise to save him and everyone on board. When we go through storms that shake even our very faith, we need to know what the Word of God says, that he will be with us no matter how bad the circumstances may look at the time, we are his children and He is our loving Father.
