I’m sure we all have our own favourite holiday destinations, both abroad and in this country. If you like sunny days and warm beaches then you head for sunny resorts on the continent. One of the most enjoyable holidays I remember was a motoring holiday we once enjoyed in our own Scottish Highlands, we had some sunny days, but the overcast ones didn’t detract
from the magnificent mountain scenery.

Which leads me on to this week’s story, which is also set in the Scottish Highlands. One winter’s day after a heavy snowfall a man from the nearby town was out walking his dog when he came upon a small boy, who was sitting and begging on a windswept bridge overlooking the cold river below. The lad was shivering from the cold and obviously in need of a good hot meal. On seeing this, the man got very angry and leaving the boy, he returned home and went to the nearest church and prayed to God. He prayed, “Lord, I don’t
understand, why don’t you do something about this poor hungry boy?” To his astonishment he heard the voice of God speaking to him and replying,”I have already done something about him.” This really surprised the man, who said, “I hope you don’t mind me saying this; but whatever you did, doesn’t seem to be working very well. “I quite agree with you there,”
replied God. The man persisted, “I don’t understand, what exactly did you do to help this poor boy?” God replied, “I would have thought that would have been obvious, I sent you to help him, didn’t I?”

We are all children of God. He is our Father and our creator. It is good to ask him to right the wrongs of this world – but always remember – He has a right to ask for our help and cooperation in return.

Reaching out to others, being outgoing, being kind, gentle and thoughtful – these qualities require great sensitivity. The more we forget about our own ego, the more open we all are to real love.
