Grannie’s Christmas.

Read 2645 Times
Have you noticed that Christmas is a time for set routines within families? Christmas day is usually spent with the children, whilst on Boxing Day; it’s into the car and a visit to grandparents to show off all the presents.

The children came over at Christmas, they brought all their presents and games.
They gave me a shawl and a plant for the hall and a card signed with all of their names.

Our Derek had got a computer, and it beeped and beeped without pause,
It can shoot down invaders and alien raiders, and start thermo-nuclear wars.

They’d bought a guitar for young Darren and he strummed very loudly, but not well,
Whilst little Simone played her toy xylophone, the anvil chorus from William Tell.

Oh! Whatever happened to Ludo, to scrabble and cuddly toys?
Now it’s all electronic and stereophonic, seems the young can’t exist without noise.

The children have gone home to Reading, blessed peace – just the budgie and me,
So it’s safe to break open my bottle of gin and watch the late film on T.V.

God, give us the serenity to accept what cannot be changed;
Give us the courage to change what should be changed;
Give us the wisdom to distinguish one from the other.
