Three times, at least, Jesus took food,
and charged it with a special significance.

Three times he took the things
men eat in this world,
and with a word of blessing transported them
into the presence of another world.

Once he did it to show
that the grace of God is sufficient
for all men’s needs.

Another time he did it as a sign
that by his death
many would be redeemed from their sins.

The third time he made use of a simple meal
to overwhelm the disciples
with the truth that there is no more death.
